Jun Ji-hyun to Debut in Hollywood

Actress Jun Ji-hyun is gearing up to debut overseas. Jun, who has gained popularity not only in Korea but also in Hong Kong, China and Japan for her sometimes sassy, sometimes naive roles in movies, will make her Hollywood debut in the movie Blood: The Last Vampire.

Blood: The Last Vampire is based on the same-titled popular animation novel by famous Japanese writer Oshii Mamoru. Jun plays the role of the vampire hunter Saya, who is half-human, half-vampire but who disguises herself as a human being in order to destroy vampires. The actress is expected to display impressive action stunts in the movie.

Playing opposite Jun will be actress Allison Miller, who has gained popularity for her role in the TV show Desperate Housewives. In the movie, Miller’s character teaches Saya what it’s like to be a human.

Interest in movies starring Jun has been on the rise in Hollywood. Jun has drawn notice in Hollywood through the movie The Lake House, starring Keanu Reeves and Sandra Bullock. The movie is a remake of the Korean movie Il Mare, which stars Jun. Jun’s hit movie My Sassy Girl is also currently being remade in the United States, with actress Elisha Cuthbert playing the lead.

The filming of Blood: The Last Vampire will begin March 15. The movie has drawn significant attention for its impressive scale as it involves famous film production firms and filmmakers. After shooting several scenes in Buenos Aires, Argentina, the filming location will switch to China before the movie opens in 2008.

The movie is expected to make Jun another hallyu star in Hollywood, like Kim Yun-jin. Jun will go by the name “Gianna Jun” in the United States.

doozy: In addition to Il Mare and My Sassy Girl, I think Hollywood also bought the remake rights to JJH’s latest film Daisy.

Am I the only one here who doesn’t like the fact that JJH will debut with an American name? The movie’s storyline also doesn’t appeal to me, but most likely, I’ll catch it in the theatres to support her. In any case, I wish her the best of success.

Jeon Ji-hyun to Debut in Hollywood

Actress Jeon Ji-hyun will debut in the U.S. movie market in the role of a half-human/half-vampire warrior named Saya.

Jeon’s agency said the actress will star in the movie tentatively titled Blood The Last Vampire that is being produced by a major Hollywood production company.

Jeon, who has gained popularity in Asia for her roles in the movies Windstruck and My Sassy Girl, drew the spotlight for her plans to debut in Hollywood.

Blood The Last Vampire is based on the same-titled anime film by Japanese animation master Oshii Mamoru. French investment and distribution firm Pathe has invested in the movie, while Hong Kong producer Bill Kong and Abel Namias will produce the movie. The film will be directed by Woo In-tae, while Corey Yuen will be in charge of the action scenes.

A person from Jeon’s agency said the movie will likely be produced by a major Hollywood studio and open in the United States in 2008. The Japanese side only holds the copyright for the movie, while Pathe will be in charge of investment and distribution. He also added that the movie will be filmed only in English and that Jeon, too, will say her lines in English.

The production costs of the movie will be determined by who will play opposite Jeon. It is yet unknown when filming will begin, as the actor who will play opposite Jeon has yet to be cast.

The original role of Saya in the animation film will be cinematized in the Hollywood version.

Jeon, who is currently taking English-language courses in the United States, will return to Korea for a short period of time next month.

doozy: Sounds like an action flick? Oi! Why is it that only this type of movie genre can be shown in the US when an Asian star wants to make his/her breakthrough in Hollywood?
Anyhow, hopefully the project pulls through and the movie is good. Wish Jeon the best in everything she does!

S. Korean movie emerges as cultural symbol after years of illegal screening in China

S. Korean movie emerges as cultural symbol after years of illegal screening in China

SEOUL, Nov. 1 (Yonhap) — My Sassy Girl, a romantic comedy from South Korea, emerged as one of the 10 most popular Korean cultural symbols among Chinese people due to the widespread circulation of pirate DVDs, its producer said Wednesday, citing a Chinese survey.

According to the survey of 15 million people in China, Hong Kong and Taiwan, the 2001 blockbuster was named among the 10 most representative Korean items along with TV dramas, plastic surgery, kimchi and music bands.

While the film, starring Jeon Ji-hyun and directed by Kwak Jae-yong, proved wildly successful in other Asian countries, it has never had an official release in China, said Shincine, the Seoul-based company that produced the film.

“It cannot be screened in China because Shincine has had no deals with Chinese companies to release it there, but we’ve heard from Chinese Culture Ministry officials that it was shown in some theaters and even aired on TV,” said Kim So-yun, who works on the company’s publicity staff.

The Chinese ministry officials said about 100 million pirated copies of the movie’s DVD have circulated in China, Kim said. In 2004, South Korean media reported sales of some 70 million pirated DVDs of the movie.

With Jeon’s enormous star power, Sassy Girl became a blockbuster in South Korea and also proved successful in Japan, the Philippines, Singapore, Indonesia and Vietnam. Dreamworks Pictures in the United States bought its remake rights, which were resold to Gold Circle Film. The movie is about a male college student and a girl with eccentric and bullying behavior.

For other Korean cultural symbols, the survey named patriotism, “hangeul” (the Korean alphabet), “bulgogi” (marinated beef), Seoul and other Korean food.

The survey was conducted mostly online and also by mobile phone from June to August by the China-Korea Economic Development Association, a Beijing-based private organization, and the China Economy Newspaper, a Seoul-based journal on China, Shincine said.

doozy: My Sassy Girl is, indeed, very popular, even years after it was first screened in theaters. Heck, even a person like me who rarely purchase movies bought this one. I like the movie. It has lots of charm and the leads are very likeable, especially Jeon Ji Hyun.

Jeon Ji-hyun Snapped With Mystery Male Companion

Jeon Ji-hyun has become the target of the always persistent Hong Kong press.

Sina Dotcom’s (www.sina.com) Hong Kong site reported on Tuesday that Jeon Ji-hyun had been spotted out shopping with an unidentified male companion. According to the news website, Jeon recently visited the international city for pleasure. The couple were seen with another woman enjoying their time at a hot Hong Kong shopping spot. But the focus was on the man accompanying Jeon. The woman seen with Jeon looked like an assistant, but the man seemed not to be part of the actress’ staff, the Hong Kong press surmised.

The two exuded “closeness,” it said, and Jeon devoted a good amount of time to shopping for men’s clothes. Then the two settled on women’s clothes, the man reportedly paying for the new threads. Jeon was in turn by his side as he tried on various outfits.

The actress’ handlers at Sidus HQ say they are aware of the reports. “What is true is that the actress traveled to Hong Kong for a very important meeting, and has since returned. However, the person traveling with her is affiliated with the company, and it is nothing strange for a manager to travel along,” it said. Meanwhile, Sina Dotcom published detailed reports of Jeon’s other activities.

She reportedly has plans to head to the U.S. for language study, and has said that she will be attending a large-scale fan meet at the Saitama Super Arena this Nov. 7.
